iApps released

So the latest versions of the iApps are out, namely iLife 08 and iWork 08. I have to say that so far they dont look too bad based on what Ive read so far on the net. Ive already ordered my copies from the Apple store in the UK.

This brings to mind something that doesnt quite make sense for me though, Ive never understood why the Apple store here in the Czech Republic takes 3-5 weeks to get new software after release. It would be nice if Apple arranged for shipments to be made in advance of announcements but even so, I wouldnt expect it to take more than a week if they shipped after the announcement. A minor gripe at the end of the day but still frustrating.

Hopefully my copies will arrive on Monday, although most of the torrent sites have links up already. Actually Apple is officially offering a downloadable demo from its site www.apple.com/iwork thats good for 30 days, though Ive seen some posts on the net stating that if you remove a certain .pref file the 30 day count resets itself.

In the meantime there are some reviews and first looks up at www.tuaw.com and www.macworld.com to whet your appetite if youre still waiting to receive your discs as I am.

The one thing that I havent noticed though is anyone talking much about the installation process but it could be that I simply havent looked hard enough. I understand that iWork will install onto your mac and leave the current version alone, so you will have to remove it if you no longer want it. The new version also seems to take up less space but I havent had chance to check this yet.

As for iLife my understanding so far is that this does replace the current version with the exception of imovie as the new one doesnt have as many themes etc as the old one and also doesnt run on some of the older G4 macs.

I'll post some more once I receive my discs.

Slow shutdown with Leopard - Possible Solution?

I was just playing around with this again and remembered that in the past, having external drives connected could cause the computer to shutdown slowly, one of the things that didnt occur to me until now though, was that my Windows Bootcamp partition may be an external drive of sorts, or at the least, may be affecting the shutdown cycle. So I ejected it and then tried shutting down. The computer now shuts off in 15 seconds or less as opposed to almost a minute before, it still doesnt seem as fast as a new install of Leopard but its definitely a big improvement. The question now though is why or what is it doing with the Windows partition before it shuts down? It also possibly invalidates the earlier line of research I was following with the menu applets, so clearly I need to look into this some more but its the first definite improvement I have seen. If you try this and it improves your shutdown speed please let me know, it will be interesting to compare.

Slow shutdown with Leopard and hibernate

Just for kicks yesterday, I reset my hibernatemode to 3 as I had previously set it to 0 as outlined in one of my posts below. Interestingly enough, my MBP now shuts down just as quickly as it did when I had hibernatemode set to 0 and thats also without having to eject my windows bootcamp partition.  At the moment I have no idea why this is the case, I still have to check my log files but I thought I would share the info at least.

Audio woes with AI

Originallypublished Dec 29th 2024 Audio woes with AI I recently got a M4 Mac mini, more on that later but along with that, I also got a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th gen, that has been working quite well up until now. Yesterday I decided to try out an app called SuperWhisper , as I hoped that it would help speed up my workflow, in particular, writing these blog posts for example. I installed it via my setapp subscription ( referral link if you’re interested, we both get a free month), launched it and tried to dictate something. It didn’t see the mic, which was weird, so I checked the system preferences - security settings, all looked good there. I decided to try ChatGPT and see if that worked, same problem. didn’t see the mic. Ok, lets try something else, launched Quicktime, made an audio recording no problem. Launched Logic Pro, made a quick voice recording with no problems. Tried OBS, made a quick screen recording and voice over, no problems. Went back to ChatGPT - tried again, still...
