How to Install Roblox on Linux Mint (2025) — The Easy Way

If you're trying to get Roblox running on a Linux Mint system — especially an older machine like the MacBook Pro 2015 or ANY machine — you'll find a lot of outdated or overly complex guides. So, here's a simple, clear walkthrough that actually works in 2025.

What Not To Do First

Before getting to the good stuff, here's what didn't work:

  • I initially tried cloning the Roblox launcher via GitHub (using the sober-rbx repo).

  • I ran into authentication errors even with public repos — Git kept prompting for a username and password.

  • Even when using the right URL, the connection to GitHub timed out.

Bottom line: the GitHub method was frustrating and unnecessary. Skip it.

The EASY Way: Use the Official Flatpak Package

Sober (the launcher that enables Roblox on Linux) is now officially distributed via Flathub, and it works brilliantly.

Step 1: Open Terminal and Run:

flatpak install flathub org.vinegarhq.Sober

This will install Sober and all necessary dependencies, including graphics and audio support.

Step 2: Launch Sober

Once installed, you can launch it via your application menu or from terminal:

flatpak run org.vinegarhq.Sober

OR : Click on the Linux Mint menu -> Search for Sober -> Click on it

The first time you launch it:

It will automatically download and install Roblox

  • You'll see a configuration prompt (e.g. enable controller support)

  • After confirming, Roblox will launch

I forgot to screenshot this step — but it's straightforward. Just allow the controller if you plan to use it and say Ok.

Then you just need to login to Roblox with your account and you are done.

AFTERWARDS

Whenever you want to play Roblox, just launch Sober and it will automatically launch Roblox for you!

Fan Noise & Retina Resolution Warning

If you're running this on a MacBook Pro with a retina display (like the 2015 model):

  • Roblox will launch at the screen's full native resolution (2560x1600)

  • This puts a high load on the GPU (Graphics card/chip) and fans will spin up loudly

You can reduce GPU load by:

  1. Launching any Roblox game

  2. Opening the in-game Settings > Graphics

  3. Set Graphics Mode to Manual, then reduce Graphics Quality to 2–3

This will lower stress on your system and may quiet things down.

Even with mbpfan installed and configured, older MacBooks may still run hot while gaming — it’s normal.

If you don’t have MBPFAN installed, you can install it from the Linux Mint software App Store or in Terminal type : sudo apt install mbpfan

Once installed type sudo systemctl mbpfan enable - This will let it start at boot

Summary

  • Use the Flatpak method, not GitHub

  • Launch Sober once and let it do the rest

  • Lower the resolution or graphics in-game to help performance

  • Works great on older laptops like the MacBook Pro 2015

Roblox now runs smoothly, and my son is currently testing it — so far, so good.
